Layar: The next step from QR Codes?

Imagine the possibilities for recruitment. Pass out brochures where people hover over people to receive video fo their testimonials or a chance for recruiters to tell people about the company rather than people having to read through an extensive brochure. People are much more likely to sit through a video rather than read through several paragraphs. While this might be on the horizon, it never hurts to keep an eye on the coming technology and keeping in mind how we can apply it to HR and Recruitment Alternative Methods.

INTERNET - 100 tips to find a new job

I stumbled across this today while hunting for different types of video campaigns done by companies hiring. This is a site called 100 Cheer Girl that was created by Soft Bank Human Capital in Japan (yes, it seems that I have been on an Asia recruiting kick lately...) and the videos show 100 girls offering advice with how to find success in your career and finding a job. So far I have only found this offered in Japanese.
The campaign consisted of it's own web page along with a youtube.com page that contains all the videos. http://www.youtube.com/user/100cheergirl
Evidently there was a quiz that popped up that tackled the videos and what they covered. Granted, in America this might not have been quite so politically correct but the idea kind of reminds me of an extended version of a coal companies website that had videos about the facts of mining and the company's history that candidates were then offered a pop quiz over. Developing something like this that tackled various positions within your company and then offering some kind of way to quiz followers and display results and maybe ranking could be a great way to involve your candidates.

INTERNET - The Candidate's Virtual Experience

Elaine Rigoli has a blog posted on ere.net that I came across the other day. This is an excellent article on how your company can better present itself to candidates. It covers virtual/interactive approaches, your career site, internal employee movement and job expectations. This also offers up some very good examples of what companies have running right now.

I do agree with the statement on virtual job fairs being without value unless new information is being introduced to candidates. To defeat this in a real-time interactive way, why not host online Q&A session between candidates and current employees. Let the questions be asked and answered fully. Topics might come up that you never realized held so much interest for your candidates. It offers a learning tool for both your company and your candidates.

PRINT - McDonalds "Make Up Your Own Mind" UK Campaign

Has your company found yourself in the middle of a debate and had a hard time hiring? While most would shy away from speaking about it, McDonalds makes a nice opportunity from the already open discussion. By creating a site to inform and educate they promote their brand to both consumers and potential employees while addressing their side of the discourse. Check their site out and tell us what you think.

GOVERNMENT - Army Deploys 'Experience Center'

The US Army has rolled out with their 'Experience Center' in a Philadelphia mall on Aug. 29th. Attendees to the site have the chance to visit with staff who provide personal stories of their time served, Humvee and helicopter simulations, gaming areas and a cafe. Rather than branding this as a recruitment site, it is more of an information site. This allows for the potential to hit those in the early stages of information gathering and delivering strong detailed messages to those interested and potential candidates.

INTERVIEWS - Second Life

via: http://www.adsoftheworld.com/

This is an example of an alternative interview an agency held. I am going to try and give an overview of Second Life sometime soon. (It is kind of like The Sims but on a massive interactive scale.)

GOVERNMENT - Army Imitates Apple To Draw New Recruits

The Army is switching over to a new tactic of reaching their target. They are opening a test site that is designed to be much more interactive than a traditional recruitment office. This includes simulators, large wrap-around video screens and the potential candidates have the availability to play America's Army, an online game released in 2002 that now spans across computers, consoles and cell phones.

WEBSITE - Consol Careers Interactive Website

Consol Careers provides a great example of a company using a micro recruitment site to help inform candidates while interacting with the company. It has been seen that often, when candidates do not last long once they attain the job; it is because they were not expecting everything they were required to do. The reasons can range from work hours, responsibilities, work environment, to any number of attributes found on the job. Videos offer a clear display of examples of work to be done and their potential for growth in the industry.
