Aussie's New Military Recruitment Campaign

We all recognize the pop-cultural iconic picture of "Superman" pulling back his "Clark Kent" attire to reveal that super-seal of red and yellow upon his chest, right? Well taking a page from Superman's comics, the Australian defense department has taken a grand step in recruiting reservists with photos such as this.

Advertisments can be found on billboards, magazines, TV, movies ads, newspapers, and not forgetting to mention, their website, which depicts everyday working people lifting up or opening their shirts, revealing the militrary fatigues underneath. By doing this, the site plays up the good benefits, nice travel, personal growth, and community involvement.

FRIDAY FUN - Lady Gaga and the US Army

Just passing this video along. Looks like after it was filmed people were wondering if those involved in making it were going to get into any trouble but Major Michelle Baldanza of the 82nd Airborne Division said that there would be no reprimand and the video actually helped to show the high morale and humor that is felt among the paratroopers.

It isn't a recruitment video but it certainly shows the lighter side of the US Army.

WEBSITE - US National Guard "Moments of Pride"

The US National Guard recently created a website that pulls information from individuals' Facebook pages and combines it with their recruitment video. It is a great step toward making candidates feel that they are already part of the team while giving them a glimpse of the job.

This ad was recently pulled from television for being sexist.
For more military recruitment ads, check out: http://patriotadvertising.blogspot.com/2009/03/video-various-international-military.html
The Ukrainian Military Commercial looks awfully familiar to the Austrian ad in question. =]

Here is the article about the ad withdrawal.

The Royal Navy is revamping their campaign. This is the new spot, "Heartbeat" in the campaign "Life Without Limits":

They plan to run 9 different 10 second ads starting Jan 4th.

HR - Navy for Moms

Many times when you are recruiting for more "high risk" careers or positions, half the battle isn't recruiting your applicants, but also recruiting the support of their family and friends. By creating a forum of discussion and information, this can help tear down assumptions made about jobs and locations and help build a bond between your applicants, their families and your recruiters. The more people know and understand about positions, the better they are able to make an informed position and they might be more likely to make that decision if they have the active support of their social group.
Do you have particular positions that are hard to hire for that might fall into this kind of category? Have you found out what keeps people from applying?

PRINT - Creative Recruitment Ad for the New Zealand Army

These placements take on a little more light hearted approach and are sending out a call for chefs and psychiatrists for their army. They keep things simple and clean in their design and simple direct candidates to their website. What are your thoughts on this approach?

NONTRADITIONAL - Gaming works magic for u.s. army

Brandflakes for Breakfast and Game Politics posted articles about the Army's use of their video game, America's Army, and how is has been used as a recruitment tool and how effective it has been in relation to other areas of advertising. Game Politics also makes a note at the impact the video game has had on recruits as far as how they react in battle and their how they receive and understand what is happening in battle as well.

Below are the links for the articles as well as the gaming site. Check them out and tell us what you think!

NON-TRADITIONAL - Air Force, Xbox LIVE hook up to feature recruiting message

Back in November of 2008 the Air Force helped sponsor a series of shorts focusing on Horror meets Comedy on Xbox LIVE in exchange for banner ads, video downloads and theme arrangements for users to download. I am still waiting for the PlayStation 3 HOME to try and take advantage of their system to start holding virtual job fairs. Unfortunately that price range is around half a million at this time... Maybe it will take the action of a job board teaming up with them to bring the cost down and turn it into something that could be feasible for lower cost recruitment. (At least lower than half a mil.)

What are your thoughts on advertising in game/virtual environments?

Have you tried it before?
